Cranial Osteopathy

Cranial osteopathy is a refined and subtle type of osteopathic treatment that uses very gentle manipulative pressure to encourage changes throughout the whole body, including the head. It is a particularly effective treatment method for people of all ages from birth to old age.
Osteopaths are trained to use a wide variety of different techniques ranging from the dramatic clicking of the ‘high velocity thrust’ to the gentle approach of ‘cranial osteopathy’. Each osteopath develops his/her own treatment style/approach often using a combination of different techniques. Within each treatment session the techniques used are modified and adapted according to how an individual patient responds and to achieve the desired results.
Throughout life, stresses and strains accumulate as a result of many things such as accidents, illnesses and general life stress. The patient’s body may have been able to absorb most of the effects but a lasting strain pattern sometimes remains. Over time it may be more and more difficult to cope with these stresses and symptoms may start to show.

An osteopath takes a detailed medical history from the patient followed by a careful examination which includes the use of his /her highly developed sense of touch to detect areas of restriction and tension. A diagnosis will be made of what is causing the symptoms and the ‘story’ put together of how they have developed. Using very subtle and gentle techniques the accumulated stresses and strains are then gradually released. The aim is to relieve the current symptoms and also to improve the underlying health of the tissues as far as possible in order to prevent recurrence.
Patients may feel sensations of pressure or warmth, either under the osteopath’s hands or elsewhere. Most patients find cranial osteopathy deeply relaxing.
Cranial osteopathy assists patients with a wide range of problems; not only those directly related to the head but also to whole body trauma patterns such as after whiplash accidents or heavy falls. This type of treatment is so gentle that it can even be used with new born babies following difficult births. See Babies and Children.
