Trapped nerves

Book Now Get in touch

There are 31 pairs of spinal nerves: 8 cervical, 12 thoracic, 5 lumbar, 5 sacral, and 1 coccygeal. Each pair connects the spinal cord with a specific region of the body.

Several structures can press on the nerve anywhere along this route and cause pain, tingling or altered sensation.

Common structures which can compress the nerves include the discs, swelling associated with inflammation, wear and tear affecting the joints in the neck or back and severe muscle spasm.

At the OHC our Osteopaths are trained to do a full Neurological assessment to find out where and why the nerve has been damaged/trapped. We use soft tissue techniques, joint stretches and mobilisations to reduce the pressure on the nerve and reduce the pain and symptoms.

In some cases, your Osteopath may refer you back to your GP for further investigations to ensure you are receiving the correct treatment for you.
